Today  I’m so excited to talk about how to figure out what to do with your life.

This is blog is a transcript of the video below! Read, watch, or do both!

Either way, these tips are going to help you find your passion, find your life purpose or even get to the next level if you’re feeling stuck and you’re in that space of, “Oh my God I don’t know what to do with my life,” which we all get that plateau.

Today I have four really great steps for you that are a little bit different than other people talk about, and that’s why they’re really going to help you figure out what to do with your life if you apply them.

Figure out what to do with your life, find your purpose and passion, and manifest your dreams! Read this article to learn exactly how.

That’s always the key — applying them. And the last step number four is definitely the most powerful. So you’re going to want to stick around till the end.

And if you are new to my blog, my name’s Suzanne Heyn.

I’m a spiritual mentor and guide for driven creatives who want to live their purpose and make a living with their truest gifts because I believe that’s not just what we get to do, but it’s how it has to be.

I’ve used these same four steps to discover my purpose after a really long — decades long — search trying to find them to discover my truest gifts, connect to what they really are.

And of course monetize them and create the life that I dreamed of where I get to give my gifts to the world, help other people and make as much money as I want from that. And that’s what I’m here to help you do too.

Without further adieu let me share with you the four steps to figure out what to do with your life.

The first step is to surrender.

I know you might not like this. But before we can change anything we have to accept things exactly as they are.

And this for a lot of people is why manifestation doesn’t work, because they’re doing it on a platform of resistance or wanting the present moment to be something other than it is, or you’re wanting to get something from outside of you so that you can be good enough.

All that does is creates a sense of being stuck in a rut where you’re fighting, resisting and you’re taking that energy and putting it into any changes you make.

And that’s one of the reasons why — I’m getting a little ahead of myself but — that’s one of the reasons why things don’t work, or when you’re stuck it’s easy to get further stuck in a rut.

Because at some level you don’t feel safe or good enough being where you are.

And so the first step to figure out what to do with your life is to accept where you are and know that once you stop fighting life —because that’s exhausting right? It’s exhausting to fight life.

And so once you’ve stopped resisting life and accept exactly where you are, then you can use that energy to create whatever you want.

I always like to use the analogy of cooking dinner in the kitchen when you don’t have any food. This is something that happens to me quite a lot.

And if you’re looking through your fridge or looking through your pantry just saying, “there’s no food, there’s no food, there’s no food,” then you have no idea what to cook for dinner and then you end up, what I don’t know, eating out, which is not a huge worst-case scenario.

What would happen to me at times is that then when I say, “OK well what do I have here? What do I have in the kitchen?”

Then I find one ingredient, and then another ingredient, and then another ingredient. And before I knew it, I’ve cooked an entire meal and dinner with ingredients that I already had in my kitchen.

I love this analogy because this is exactly what it’s like to find your passion and live your purpose so you can figure out what to do with your life.

It’s just one step after another, and you get — I’m getting way ahead of myself, but it’s kind of hard to do steps when everything is just not linear, it’s all combined so — but that’s really what happens, right?

You accept and trust that you have everything that you need to get to the next level, that you do have all the tools within, that your gifts are good enough. Along the way, you’ll go to the supermarket and get more food, or you’ll take a course and get help from a mentor or you’ll learn a new skill.

You’ll get more things along the way, but you have everything that you need to take that next step and figure out what to do with your life.

And so that’s really what surrender is.

Surrender is a process of opening up to the food that’s already in your kitchen and to all of the opportunities and blessings that are already in your life that you’re not taking advantage of because you’re just looking around saying, “I don’t have this, I don’t have this..”

Which is a place of lack. It’s a place of not enough.

And from a manifestation perspective, we don’t create things to feel good enough. We receive a reflection of what we are.

So when you recognize through surrender that you already are enough, and that everything’s perfect as it is, then your intuition speaks and then you receive the guidance to take that next step.

So and that’s really step —

The second step to figure out what to do with your life is to follow your curiosity.

This was a great term that I learned from Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic, which was follow your curiosity and take the next step. (That’s an affiliate link, and if you buy, I receive a small commission at no cost to you. Thanks for your support!)

A lot of times people dismiss the next step because they don’t know where it will go. But I love that Martin Luther King Jr., quote,

“You don’t need to see the whole staircase to take the next step.”

And so this journey to figure out what to do with your life, this journey living your purpose, finding your passion, and making a living with your truest gifts, it’s really a journey of trust.

You’re not going to make it very far if you don’t trust. If you don’t trust, you’re holding on and resisting. Trust and surrender are so closely linked.

When I was looking for my passion in my life purpose, I eventually started my blog, but that wasn’t the first thing that I did.

My next step was actually — I did random things like take a jewelry making class. And I took like tennis lessons; things that I never ended up doing again.

But the key is that it got me into a really playful place with life. So I was playing and exploring from this place of feeling good enough and accepting exactly where I was.

And then from that place, I ended up starting my blog which became my life purpose but, or my business, right.

There’s a separation between that which I can talk about in another video.

It’s kind of a whole other topic but I started my blog, it was totally different from what it was what it is today.

I sucked at first, and I didn’t know what I was doing, and I didn’t know my voice.

I didn’t know what I was going to write about so I just did whatever came to mind.

I took the next step, and I trusted that as long as I kept showing up, taking that next step and taking that next step, always moving into my fear, always expanding and staying in touch with my vision, it would take me where I wanted to go.

And it has. And every time again things felt stuck or not good, I repeat the same process, right because when we feel stuck then we end up resisting.

And so we can either identify with that resistance and keep spinning our wheels and going deeper…

Or we can say, “OK I am where I am for a reason. This is helping me; it’s trying to teach me something. This is an invitation to rise up in the next level.”

Surrender totally. Let go, and then let your intuition speak, and what is the next step?

Maybe it’s to start a blog. Or it’s to hire a mentor. Is it to to start painting? And again, you don’t have to know where it will go. Oftentimes you don’t. Just take that next step and you will figure out what to do with your life.

A lot of times people get stuck because they take don’t that next step. They’re waiting for…I don’t know, a big sign from God.

You know and sometimes that happens, but a lot of times, it’s just a gentle nudge. Hey, do this. What if you did that?, and then going ahead and just doing it.

What’s the worst that can happen? At least you’re getting into motion, right. You’re getting into motion, and then as you’re creating that momentum, then things grow from there. You will figure out what to do with your life.

So step three is a little bit more… Something practical that you can do in your journal.

The third step is to journal and get clear on your values, what you like to do, and your non-negotiables in life.

I want you to get clear on what you like to do — not just your gifts, not just what you’re good at, but what you’d like to do, and get clear on your non-negotiables in life.

This is really important because it’s sort of like the GPS that you put into Google Maps or whatever, into your soul.

For me, you know my values and gifts and bigger vision was — I like to write. I wanted to share my ideas with the world. I wanted to have the freedom to travel.

I don’t really feel called to do a lot of in-person things. I really like the idea of making money online and running my business that way. I just wanted to have a lot of freedom.

I don’t like things on my schedule. I like to spend — I’m hugely introverted — I like to spend my days pretty much alone just thinking, reading, writing.

An earlier version of me might have said, “That’s impossible. You can’t live that life. How are you going make money doing that?”

But living your purpose is about being who you really are, and the way of making money is only part of that. So yeah you want to identify your truest gifts in exchange for monetary value, but what’s most important first is to get clear on the foundation, which is your values and how you want to live.

So just get clear on that.

I tell my clients, you don’t have to see very far ahead if you can only see five feet.

Another analogy for you: It’s like driving in a car when there’s fog, right. There’s really heavy fog.

You might only be able to see five feet in front of you, but you still can get to your destination if you just keep focusing on that next five feet.

So if that’s all you can see right now, that next five feet, get clear on that ,and then that is part of what will help you figure out what to do with your life.

And so you’re sort of just setting that right, as like conditions for how you want to live, and then from that your soul will guide you forward. Hey what about this? How about you do this?, and then you evaluate different options and choices.

So if you’re contemplating between two different ideas, and you’re not sure which direction you want to go, then you can just take a step back and say, you know maybe they’re both good. Maybe there is no right or wrong. A lot of times there isn’t a right or wrong.

This is all based on what you love. And we’re just all conditioned to not trust ourselves or to not trust our desires.

You can trust your desires.

So just ask yourself what you really want.

If anything was possible, what would I do? What would my next step be?

I mean clear on your values and what you really want to do. And also of course sometimes you’ll have to go out of your comfort zone.

But being clear on those things, being clear and who you are will help you take those next steps to figure out what to do with your life.

You know, for example I could have just as easily continued my career as a freelance writer. You know it wasn’t really fulfilling me which it is one good reason not to do it anymore.

But there were other different reasons. Because one of my big values and goals and gifts is how I see the world in a different way.

And I like to share that, and as a freelance writer, I was always just parroting back other people’s perceptions of the world or the good work that they were doing.

And that is what ultimately made that not fulfilling.

So if you’re feeling stuck or you’re not liking your current situation, that can help give you really important information to move forward.

What exactly is it that you don’t like, and in what exact way are you not feeling fulfilled? And then have that as a new requirement going forward.

As you’re engaging in the world and following your curiosity, make sure that all the new steps that you’re taking have contained in it those essential ingredients.

So comment below, and let me know what is your big gift or value, or what is something that you really want to have in a career that you think right now, no way that’s not possible.

Just write it below and let me know what you’re really wanting from your life.

The fourth step is tapping into the energy of your desire to inspire your next right step.

So number four, and this is the most important step, tune into the energy of finding your purpose and your passion.

So this goes back to the first point about surrender because a lot of times when we take action from resistance…

Whatever action we take, the energy we fuel into that action influences the results of that action.

So if you are taking action based on resistance or not wanting to be where you are, or not liking it, you are creating conditions to create more of that energy and emotion.

And so surrender is important because it opens you up to your intuition the next steps.

But it’s also important because it shifts your energetic state. So it’s really important to always take action from a place of openness and peace and joy and expansion because then you’re creating more of that.

This can really help you to when you’re thinking about different options, or if you’re not sure which direction to take.

Think about how each feels in your body, and which feeling do you want to feel more of?

What feels like resignation? You don’t want to take action that feels like resignation because that will just create more of that.

Take action that feels exciting, that feels like flow, maybe even a little scary but that you feel deep down, OK. This is the right action to take.

Indecision is also an energy, right. So when you’re feeling indecisive the worst thing that you can do is to wallow in that indecisive energy.

If you were on the other side of this, how would that feel? Or if you weren’t feeling indecisive, and you felt clear, what would you do then? What action would you take then?

So tap into the energy of confidence and hope and triumph. Read a book or watch a motivational video or do whatever you have to do to get into that energy, and then take action from that energy, and you will create the results that you want.

And again just taking the next step and trusting that as you take the next step, or the next step, in the next step, you will go exactly where you are supposed to be.

So tell me below. What emotions do you really want to feel when you are living our purpose and following your passion?

What is it that you really want to feel? Is it contentment? Is it fulfillment? Is it recognition? Is it success? How does success feel in your body? What are the emotions that you want to feel?

I surrender all, as I am guided by the light of what is and what is to come, as I delightfully accept all that is to be bestowed upon me in ways that I will be filled with joy compassion as I fulfill my purpose with the life partner who will grow with me as we enjoy our journey of discovery together sharing our knowledge and our lessons taking us both to the next level of our creation.

  • Greta says:

The idea of completely surrendering was really an eye opener for me! Focusing on what I already have instead of what I still lack seems so simple yet so inspiring at the same time. Thank you for a great tip!
